Shamrock is a young sprig of clover that is often used as a symbol of Ireland. Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is said to have used the clover as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity in Christianity. The name shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg, which is a diminutive of the word seamair and simply means a small clover.
